Abstract

This study aimed at identifying evaluation of lifelike language functions in the Arabic Language textbooks of lower elementary stage- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades- in Jordan. The study used the statement and paragraph as analysis units for texts, questions as analysis units for activities and exercises. A valid reliable instrument that included a standard checklist consisting of (30) lifelike language functions was used. The findings of the study showed that the statements and paragraphs of the Arabic Language textbooks included (29) language functions. The questions of the texts also had the same number of language functions. It was found out that (16) language functions (equal to less than 1%) concentration, were in the paragraphs and (24) language functions (equal to less than 1%) concentration, were in the questions. The major focus of the language functions in the textbooks was directed to oral conversational situations, oral discussions, descriptions, conflict resolutions and negotiations which comprised more than (43%) of the real life language functions in all the textbooks. The findings also revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between texts and questions in terms of using language functions. The study presented some recommendations and suggestions to enhance the functional linguistic aspect of the lifelike language functions.
