Dr. Fadi A. Safi

Dr. Fadi Safi, MD, is an Associate Professor in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Toledo Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio. He also serves as Program Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship and Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit and Respiratory Care Services. Dr. Safi completed his internal medicine residency followed by fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Toledo, where he also served as Chief Pulmonary Fellow. He earned his medical degree from Al-Quds University School of Medicine in Jerusalem.
Dr. Safi is involved in medical education and academic teaching. He teaches medical students, residents, and fellows through lectures, conferences, ICU teaching rounds, and pulmonary clinic training. He received several awards including 2024 Dean’s Award for Faculty Early Career Clinical Excellence and the 2021 Faculty Teaching Award, voted by medical students and residents. He also chairs institutional committees such as critical care quality improvement, including initiatives related to sepsis management, pneumonia and COPD readmission reduction, post operative respiratory failure, code blue committe, antomicrobial stewardship, infection control and rapid response systems.
Dr. Safi remains active in research related to pulmonary and critical care medicine, with work spanning interstitial lung disease, critical care outcomes, pulmonary infections, and ventilator-associated events. He authored or co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, systematic reviews, and case reports and has presented research at international conferences including the American Thoracic Society (ATS) and the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST) meetings. His research include national database analyses, biomarker development studies, and clinical trials investigating therapies for respiratory diseases such as intestinal lung diseases, ventilator associated pneumonia and COVID-19–related pneumonia.
