Abstract

This study aimed at identifying levels of the need for cognition and metacognitive thinking among Yarmouk university students. For the purpose of the study, a sample of 701 students was chosen randomly from the undergraduate program in the academic year 2009/2010. Two scales were used to measure the need for cognition and metacognitive thinking levels. The results of the study revealed that the level of the need for cognition among the sample of the study was moderate, and that the level of metacognitive thinking was high. The results also indicated a positive statistically significant relationship between the need for cognition and metacognitive thinking, although that relationship did not differ according to the variables of sex, field, or the academic level. Based on these results, the researchers recommended that students’ levels of metacognitive thinking and their need for cognition be developed.

الملخص

هدفت الدراسة الحالية إلى الكشف عن مستوى الحاجة إلى المعرفة والتفكير ما وراء المعرفي لدى طلبة البكالوريوس في جامعة اليرموك. ولتحقيق ذلك اختيرت عينة مكونة من (701) طالباً وطالبة من طلبة البكالوريوس المسجلين للفصل الثاني من العام الدراسي 2009/2010. كما استخدم مقياسان للكشف عن مستوى الحاجة إلى المعرفة والتفكير ما وراء المعرفي لدى عينة الدراسة. وقد أظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن مستوى الحاجة إلى المعرفة لدى طلبة البكالوريوس في جامعة اليرموك جاء بدرجة متوسطة، وأن مستوى التفكير ما وراء المعرفي كان مرتفعاً. كما بينت النتائج وجود علاقة طردية ودالة إحصائياً بين مستوى الحاجة إلى المعرفة ومستوى التفكير ما وراء المعرفي لدى طلبة البكالوريوس في جامعة اليرموك، على الرغم من عدم اختلاف هذه العلاقة باختلاف متغيرات الجنس، والتخصص والمستوى الدراسي. وبناءً على هذه النتائج خرجت الدراسة بعدد من التوصيات متمثلة بأهمية التركيز على تنمية الحاجة إلى المعرفة وتنمية مهارات التفكير ما وراء المعرفي لدى طلبة جامعة اليرموك.
