Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the common instructional and learning strategies used by social studies teachers in the upper elementary stage at UNRWA schools in Jordan from their perspectives. To achieve this goal a survey questionnaire consisting of (56) items was developed. The survey items which were answered on a five Likert scale were distributed amongst three domains describing strategies namely: 1) behavioral strategies, 2) cognitive strategies, and 3) emotional strategies. It was administered to the study sample which consisted of (80) male and female teachers. The results of the study showed that teachers of social studies tend to use a variety of instructional strategies including behavioral, cognitive and emotional strategies. The results also indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the instructional and learning strategies employed by teachers that were attributed to their gender, specialization, and years of teaching experience, while there were statistically significant differences in the strategies they employ that were attributed to their educational qualifications in favour of those teachers with higher levels of educational qualifications on the emotional strategies domain and on the whole items of the survey questionnaire.

الملخص

هدف هذه الدراسة هو الكشف عن الاستراتيجيات التعليمية – التعلمية الشائعة لدى معلمي الدراسات الاجتماعية في المرحلة الأساسية العليا في مدارس وكالة الغوث الدولية في الأردن من وجهة نظرهم أنفسهم. لتحقيق هذا الهدف تم تطوير استبانة مكونة من (56) فقرة موزعة على مقياس خماسي التدريج، وتشتمل على ثلاثة مجالات للاستراتيجيات، هي: الاستراتيجيات السلوكية، والمعرفية، والانفعالية. وتم تطبيقها على عينة من (80) معلماً ومعلمة. بينت نتائج الدراسة أن الاستراتيجيات الشائعة بين المعلمين كانت ثمان استراتيجيات سلوكية، وإحدى وعشرون استراتيجية معرفية، واثنتا عشر استراتيجية انفعالية. كما أشارت النتائج إلى عدم وجود فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية في ممارسات المعلمين للاستراتيجيات التعليمية التعلمية تعزى لجنس المعلم، وتخصصه وعدد سنوات خبرته، في حين وجدت فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية في ممارسات المعلمين للاستراتيجيات التعليمية التعلمية تعزى للمؤهل العلمي للمعلم لصالح المستويات العليا من المؤهل العلمي، وذلك على مجال الاستراتيجيات الانفعالية وعلى أداة الدراسة كاملة.
