Abstract

The great sensitivity of CO2 laser photoacoustic detection of gases and vapours (PPb or better) suggests that the monitoring of essential oil emissions in living may be possible thereby affording a monitor of the potential essential oil yield in situ, prior to harvesting. A line-tunable CO2 laser is used in conjunction with a heat-pipe type of photoacoustic cell, operating at temperatures ranging from 5 to some 200°C, using nitrogen as the carrier gas. Identifying spectral fingerprint features of the photoacoustic (PA): spectrum in the 9 and 10 ?m- spectral region have been obtained, which in the case of eucalyptus is particularly striking and follows the absorption spectrum of the principal constituent of this particular oil, 1,8 cineole.
