Abstract

Objectives: The present study aimed to identify the level of cognitive distortions among mothers of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the Sultanate of Oman. The study also aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention program in reducing cognitive distortions among these mothers. Methods: The study followed a descriptive and semi-empirical design. To achieve the study's objectives, a cognitive distortions scale was used, and a CBT-based counseling program was developed. The descriptive study sample consisted of 100 mothers of children with ASD enrolled in Al-Wafa Centers for the Rehabilitation of Disabled Children, selected randomly. The semi-empirical study sample consisted of 20 mothers of children with ASD who scored highest on the cognitive distortions scale. They were randomly divided into two groups: an experimental group consisting of 10 mothers who received a CBT-based counseling program, and a control group that did not receive any intervention. Results: The descriptive study results indicated that the level of cognitive distortions among mothers of children with ASD was moderate. The semi-empirical study results showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups (pre-test and post-test) in favor of the experimental group, attributable to the CBT program. The results also indicated no significant differences in the means of the experimental group between the post-test and follow-up test. Conclusion: Indeviduals with autism spectrum disorder and their families deserve attention and study, with the need to implement counseling and treatment programs for their families to correct and reduce cognitive distortions.

الملخص

الهدف: هدفت الدراسة الحالية الى الكشف عن مستوى التشوهات المعرفية لدى أمهات ذوي اضطراب طيف التوحد في في سلطنة عُمان، كما هدفت الدراسة إلى الكشف عن فاعلية برنامج إرشادي معرفي سلوكي في خفض التشوهات المعرفية لدى أمهات الأطفال ذوي اضطراب طيف التوحد. المنهجية: اتبعت الدراسة المنهج الوصفي والمنهج شبه التجريبي. ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة؛ تم استخدام مقياس التشوهات المعرفية، كما تم إعداد برنامج إرشادي مبني على النظرية السلوكية المعرفية. وقد تكونت عينة الدراسة الوصفية من (100) أمٍ لأطفال ذوي اضطراب طيف التوحد الملتحقين في مراكز الوفاء لتأهيل الأطفال المعاقين تم اختيارهن بالطريقة المتيسرة، كما تكونت عينة الدراسة شبة التجريبية من (20) أماً من أمهات الأطفال ذوي اضطراب طيف التوحد ممن حصلن على أعلى الدرجات على مقياس التشوهات المعرفية. وقد تم توزيعهن عشوائياً الى مجموعتين: مجموعة تجريبية تألفت من (10) أمهات تلقين برنامج معرفي سلوكي بواقع (15) جلسة ارشادية، مُدة كل منها (90) دقيقة على مدار شهرين متتابعين. ومجموعة ضابطة لم تخضع لأية معالجة. النتائج: أظهرت نتائج الدراسة الوصفية إلى أن مستوى التشوهات المعرفية لدى أمهات ذوي اضطراب طيف التوحد جاء بدرجة متوسطة، كما أظهرت نتائج الدراسة شبه التجريبية أن هناك فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية بين المجموعة التجريبية والمجموعة الضابطة (القياس القبلي- والبعدي) لصالح المجموعة التجريبية التي تعزى إلى البرنامج السلوكي المعرفي. كما أشارت النتائج أيضًا إلى عدم وجود فروق ذات دلالة إحصائية في متوسطات أداء المجموعة التجريبية بين الاختبار البعدي واختبار المتابعة. الخلاصة: تعتبر فئة ذوي اضطراب طيف التوحد وأسرهم من الفئات التي تستحق الاهتمام والدراسة، مع ضرورة تنفيذ برامج إرشادية وعلاجية لذويهم وأسرهم لتصحيح التشوهات المعرفية وخفضها لديهم.
