Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of lecturing and discussion methods in the teaching of Arabic syntax to Arabic majors in the faculties of Arts and Education at the Islamic University in Gaza. The reseachers used, for this purpose, a multiple choice achievement test. The sample of the study comprised 80 women and men students. they were divided into two groups, each consisting of 40 students. They were tuaght by lecturing and discussion methods. The study had three null hypotheses. After testing the hypotheses, it was found out that there were no statistically significant differences at (? = 0.05) between the averages of the lecturing method group and the discussion method group. However, it was found out that there were statistically significant differences between the student’s grade average in the achievement test in the following sections: memorization 7.6, comprehension 6.97, application 6.19 at (? = 0.05). There was interaction between the lecturing and discussion styles and the three levels of knowledge in the teaching syntax. The hypotheses were tested by using the analysis of variance and Tukey method.
