Abstract

This study investigates the pain and exhaustion following Abu al-Dahab's arrival in Damascus. The document/ manuscript I look at here shows the historical resources that mark the first Egyptian military campaign led by Muhammad Abu al-Dahab to besiege Damascus in the modern era. The relevant events were re-told by an eye-witness who took notes of this campaign lasting for sixteen days exactly, covering Abu al-Dahab's arrival in and departure from al-Sham. The document provided special explanation of the overall purpose and development that accompanied the campaign and of the reasons that motivated Abu al-Dahab's coming to Damascus including his sudden withdrawal and return to Egypt. The document includes important historical texts such as the book entitled ''safety'' (al –Aman) written after meeting with scientists and Damascus elitist men whose role influenced the failure of Abu al-Dahab to stay in Damascus thereafter.

الملخص

تمثل المخطوطة (الوثيقة) التي نقوم بدراستها وتحقيقها مصدراً تاريخياً أرخ للحملة العسكرية المصرية الأولى التي قادها محمد بك أبو الذهب للسيطرة على دمشق الشام في العصر الحديث من قبل شاهد عيان سجل يوميات هذه الحملة يوماً بيوم وعلى مدار ستة عشر يوماً تماماً هي مدة إقامة أبي الذهب والجيش المصري من حين مجيئه للشام إلى يوم سفره. إذ قدمت الوثيقة تفسيراً خاصاً ورؤية مميزة لمجمل التطورات التي رافقت الحملة بدءاً بالأسباب التي كانت وراء تجهيزها وقدومها إلى دمشق لتحقيق الأهداف المتوخاة وانتهاءً بالدوافع التي كانت وراء الانسحاب المفاجئ والعودة إلى مصر. وانفردت الوثيقة بتضمينها بعض النصوص التاريخية المهمة مثل: كتاب الأمان الذي أصدره قائد الحملة بعد لقائه علماء دمشق ووجهاءها، ورد العلماء عليه الذي بين دورهم وأثرهم في عدم نجاح أبي الذهب في حكم دمشق والبقاء فيها.
