Abstract

The aim of this study is to explore the effect of an instructional program based on K-W-L strategy in acquiring the reading skills of the fifth grade students in public schools within Nablus Governorate. Quasi experimental design was used in the study. The sample consisted of (61) students from Yasser Arafat’s elementary school split into 2 groups, Experimental and control. The experimental group was taught using the K-W-L strategy, while the control group was taught using the traditional method. An instructional program based on K-W-L strategy to develop the reading skills was designed to achieve the goals of this study, the researcher has carried out an achievement exam that measures the reading skills and the students’ attitudes towards learning this skill. The results have revealed that there are statistical differences in the mean grades of the experimental group، and the control group in the achievement of reading skill and the attitudes towards learning the reading skill, the study also highlighted a relation between the achievement and the attitudes towards learning the reading skills among the fifth grade students. The researcher has recommended doing more research about this strategy comparing it with the traditional method on a wider scale including more different grades and topics.
