Abstract

This study aims to examine the phenomenon of bachelorhood in Jordanian society and to clarify the reasons behind and the effects of this phenomenon on the level of individuals, family and society. In order to achieve the objectives of this study, the descriptive analytical method was used. 15 interviews were conducted with female bachelors and another 15 interviews were conducted with male bachelors. The study adopted a purposive sample of non-married individuals whom are 35 years old and above. The main finding of this study concluded that bachelorhood represents freedom, independency and psychological stability for both male and female informants. Moreover, the finding of this study emphasized the existence of a number of personal, social, economic, psychological and cultural factors that contributed to the spread of this phenomenon. The study showed that there are many social and psychological effects of the phenomenon of bachelorhood on individuals and society. The negative view of society towards the bachelor and the sense of loneliness are among the most prominent social effects of bachelorhood for both females and males. However the vast majority of the study sample reported a positive effect from psychological aspect represented in the increase in self-reliance. Several recommendations emerged from this study most importantly, the importance to organize several courses and workshops to provide psychological counseling for male and female bachelors in order to motivate them to get rid of the negative perspectives toward this phenomenon. Moreover, more studies and research related to the intellectual and psychological aspects of bachelorhood need to be conducted to promote the idea of marriage among young people of both sexes.

الملخص

استهدفت الدراسة تعرّف ظاهرة العزوبية في المجتمع الأردني، وتوضيح أهم الأسباب التي تُسهم في انتشار هذه الظاهرة، بالإضافة الى الكشف عن أهم الاثار المترتبة على العزوبية على مستوى الفرد والمجتمع والأسرة. ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة استخدم المنهج الوصفي، حيث تم إجراء مقابلة مع 15 عازبة، 15 عازباً جرى اختيارهم بالطريقة القصدية ممن تجاوزوا السن (35 سنة فأكثر) دون زواج. توصلت الدراسة الى أن العزوبية تمثل لكلا الجنسين الحرية والإستقلال والخلو من الإلتزامات والمسؤولية بالإضافة إلى الإستقرار النفسي، كما أكَّدت نتائج الدراسة وجود مجموعة من العوامل اسهمت في انتشار ظاهرة العزوبية، تضمنت وبينت العوامل الإقتصادية، والإجتماعية، والشخصية، والنفسية، والثقافية. وبينت الدراسة وجود الكثير من الآثار الاجتماعية والنفسيّة المُترتبة على ظاهرة العزوبية على الفرد والمجتمع، حيث أن النظرة السلبية للمجتمع تجاه العازب والشعور بالوحدة هما من أبرز الآثار الاجتماعية للعزوبية سواء عند الإناث أو الذكور، بينما أفادت الغالبية العظمى من عينة الدراسة وجود أثر إيجابي للعزوبية من الناحية النفسية يتمثّل بزيادة اعتمادهم على أنفسهم. وخرجت الدراسة بعدة توصيات أهمها العمل على اعداد دورات وورشات متخصصة تقدم الإرشاد النفسي للعازبين من الذكور والإناث لتخليصهم من النظرة السلبية تجاه الزواج، واجراء المزيد من الدراسات والبحوث ذات العلاقة بالجوانب الفكرية والنفسية لتعزيز فكرة الزواج لدى الشباب من كلا الجنسين.
