Abstract

Objectives: This study aimed to systematically review the literature related to the use of artificial intelligence in research and promote the responsible and ethical use of AI in research through benefiting from that systematic literature review [SLR]. Methodology: This descriptive study relied on surveying and analysing all research available in the databases of Dar Almandumah and Scopus, from 2020 to 2024. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, the sample was limited to reviewing (102) studies addressing the AI use in scientific research. Results: The quantitative description of the study sample showed that: 72.5% of the research on the AI use in research was published in 2024, 17.6% of this sample was limited to the Chinese context, and 62.7% of this research relied on qualitative analytical approaches. The results of the SLR also revealed that AI applications have many potential benefits in all aspects and stages of research, including: data collection and analysis, anticipating future trends, supporting results and improving decision-making, and enhancing collaboration among researchers. The results also revealed several ethical risks associated with the AI use in research, such as loss of privacy, unreliable data, bias, intellectual laziness, and plagiarism. Conclusion: This systematic literature review demonstrates that AI offers significant opportunities to enhance scientific research; however, its responsible use requires balancing innovation with ethical principles and academic integrity. Recommendations: The systematic review proposed mechanisms to promote the responsible use of AI in scientific research, including: improving the ethical and human nature of research, ensuring privacy and fairness, and developing researchers' skills.
