Abstract
Purpose: This study aimed to examine the prevalence and patterns of traditional cigarette, e-cigarette, and hookah use among Palestinian university students and to explore the sociodemographic factors associated with each form of smoking. Methodology: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 401 students from universities in Ramallah, Nablus, and Hebron between February and May 2024. Participants completed a structured Arabic questionnaire assessing demographic data, smoking behaviors, perceptions, and motivations. Results: Among participants, 56.86% reported a history of smoking, with Hookah being the most common type (43.42%), followed by traditional cigarettes (30.26%) and e-cigarettes (26.31%). Smoking status was significantly associated with gender (χ² = 48.063, p < 0.001), with males more likely to smoke than females (80.1% vs. 44.2%). No significant associations were found with age, marital status, or residency. Gender was also significantly associated with traditional cigarette smoking (p = 0.0013) and Hookah use (p = 0.0056), whereas no significant difference was observed for e-cigarette use. Traditional smoking was significantly associated with age, academic level, marital status, and income, with higher prevalence among older, married, fourth-year, and higher-income students. Logistic regression showed that males had greater odds of traditional smoking (OR = 3.15, 95% CI: 1.85–5.36), while married students and those with higher incomes were also at increased risk. Other sociodemographic factors showed no consistent associations across smoking types. Conclusions: These findings underscore the pressing need for targeted public health interventions, culturally sensitive education campaigns, and university-based prevention programs.Recommendations: Universities should implement targeted tobacco-prevention and smoking-cessation programs addressing peer influence, academic stress, and misconceptions about hookah and e-cigarette safety.
