Abstract
Background: News headlines often use linguistic ambiguity to attract readers and to shape narratives in media discourse in today's world. Gap: Although there has been a vast amount of research on ambiguity, very little has been focused on the distribution of semantic ambiguity in modern online news headlines in particular. Aim: The objective of this study is to examine how common and distributed semantic and syntactic ambiguities are in digital news content. Method: The method used is a qualitative descriptive methodology based on Kreidler's (1998) semantic model, which consists of a corpus of 28 headlines taken from the online editions of BBC and CNN. Results: The results show that there was a significant use of lexical ambiguity, as 24 out of 28 sampled headlines had this feature. Polysemy was the most important linguistic strategy (n = 20) in that category, followed by homonymy (n = 4). Moreover, syntactic ambiguity (surface structure ambiguity) was identified in the rest of the four headlines. Conclusion: The results indicate that ambiguity in communication of media is not an unwanted by-product of brief writing, but rather is a strategic tool that affects how the text is read and that contributes to the construction of meaning. Recommendation: The authors' conclusion is that this study contributes to the theoretical knowledge of media-related linguistic patterns, and to the empirical knowledge of the fields of discourse analysis, pragmatics and media studies.
