This study aims to distinguish between theatrical directing as a craft, and directing depends on founding the professional basis of creativity and innovation. The researchers sought to explore the role of theater director and his responsibilities, cultivation, thought, talent and his creative tools. The study begins with a chronological review about the evolution of the process of directing. Then it addressed the methodical framework of contemporary theater director. On the practical side, the researchers examined and analyzed directing process of the play "Cross Words" written and directed by Mohamed Al-Rifai as a model for outstanding creative work. The study concluded that theatrical directing is not a craft. Creative director is an artist who has the talent, creativity, imagination, mental skills, and aesthetic experience.

تهدف هذه الدراسة إلى التمييز بين الإخراج المسرحي كونه حرفة أو صنعة والإخراج المؤسس على عملية إحترافية أساسها الإبداع والابتكار. وقد سعى الباحثان الى استكشاف دور المخرج المسرحي، والمسؤوليات المناطه به، وثقافته، وفكره، وموهبته وادواته الإبداعية. تناولت الدراسة في مستهلها استعراضاً تاريخياً لتطور عملية الاخراج. ثم بحثت في الاطار المنهجي لعمل المخرج المسرحي المعاصر. وفي الجانب التطبيقي تناول البحث النموذج الذي تم اعتماده في الدراسة والمتمثل في عملية اخراج مسرحية "كلمات متقاطعة" تأليف واخراج محمد الرفاعي كنموذج للعمل الإبداعي المتميز، حيث تمت دراسته وتحليله. وقد خلصت الدراسة الى نتائج كان اهمها ان الاخراج المسرحي ليس صنعة، والمخرج المبدع هو الفنان الذي يمتلك الموهبة والإبداع الذاتي والخيال الخصب والخبرات الحسية الذاتية والمهارات العقلية والخبرة الجمالية.
