Abstract

This study aimed to reveal the effect of competency in the second language on working memory and cognitive flexibility among bilingual students in Akko city. To achieve the objectives of the study, tools were developed to detect the level of working memory capacity, cognitive flexibility, and competency in the second language. The study sample consisted of (274) bilingual secondary school students. Results of the study showed that both of working memory capacity and cognitive flexibility levels among bilingual students came with a high degree, and there were significant statistical differences in working memory and cognitive flexibility due to the effect of gender variable, there were significant statistical differences in working memory rank due to the effect of academic major variable, and there were no significant statistical differences in the cognitive flexibility due to the effect of the academic major variable, and there were significant statistical differences in the working memory and the cognitive flexibility in the competency in a second language.

الملخص

هدفت الدراسة الى الكشف عن أثر الكفاءة في اللغة الثانية على الذاكرة العاملة والمرونة المعرفية لدى الطلبة ثُنائيي اللغة في مدينة عكا. ولتحقيق أهداف الدراسة تم تطوير أدوات للكشف عن سعة الذاكرة العاملة والمرونة المعرفية والكفاءة في اللغة الثانية. تكونت عينة الدراسة من (274) طالباً وطالبةً ثُنائيي اللغة. وأظهرت نتائج الدراسة أن مستوى كل من الذاكرة العاملة والمرونة المعرفية جاءا بدرجة مرتفعه، ووجود فروق دالة إحصائياً في كل من الذاكرة العاملة والمرونة المعرفية تعزى لأثر ألجنس، ووجود فروق دالة إحصائياً في الذاكرة العاملة تبعاً لمتغير الفرع ألدراسي، وعدم وجود فروق دالة إحصائياً في المرونة المعرفية تعزى لأثر الفرع ألدراسي، ووجود فروق دالة إحصائياً في كل من الذاكرة العاملة والمرونة المعرفية تبعاً لمستوى الكفاءة في اللغة الثانية. وخلصت الدراسة إلى العديد من التوصيات أبرزها إجراء المزيد من الدراسات حول ثُنائية اللغة في ضوء متغيرات أُخرى، وخاصةً في ضوء ندرة الدراسات العربية حول هذا الجانب.
