Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between mental fatigue and cognitive flexibility among students of the Faculty of Educational Sciences at Al al-Bayt University. The sample of the study consisted of (174) male and female undergraduate students who were chosen randomly. To achieve the study objectives, the mental fatigue scale and the cognitive flexibility scale were used. The results showed that the level of mental fatigue and cognitive flexibility was moderate. The results also showed that there are statistically significant differences in the level of mental fatigue attributed to sex variable for the benefit of male students, and the absence of statistically significant differences in the level of mental fatigue due to the variable of academic specialization. There also were statistically significant differences in the level of mental fatigue due to the level of study for the benefit of first year students. The results showed that there are statistically significant negative relationships between the total score of the mental fatigue scale (and its dimensions) and the total score of the cognitive flexibility scale and (its dimensions), except the relationship between the cognitive dimension and the alternatives dimension in the cognitive flexibility scale, the relationship between the physical dimension and both alternatives dimension and the control dimension of the cognitive flexibility scale. The study recommended the need to work out counseling programs in universities to reduce mental fatigue in the university students, which is reflected in the level of their academic performance. Also, it recommended providing students with the cognitive flexibility skills in the pre-university stages so that they become readier for the university.
