Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a professional development program based on instructional practices in improving the components of mathematical proficiency among mathematics teachers in the second cycle of basic education in the Sultanate of Oman. Methodology: To achieve the objective of the study, the experimental method was employed using a quasi-experimental design with one group and pre and post measurement. A professional development program was developed, grounded in essential instructional practices for mathematics teachers and informed by theoretical literature and prior studies on mathematical proficiency. An observation checklist was also designed to assess the five components of mathematical proficiency, namely conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and productive disposition, and its validity and reliability were verified using appropriate methods. The study sample consisted of 31 mathematics teachers in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate in the Sultanate of Oman, who participated in the program during the first semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. Results: The findings revealed the effectiveness of the professional development program based on instructional practices in improving mathematical proficiency in its various components among the study sample. Furthermore, the results indicated statistically significant differences at the (α = .05) level based on gender, in favor of female mathematics teachers in some components. Conversely, no statistically significant differences were found with respect to years of teaching experience. Recommendations: In light of these findings, the researchers proposed several recommendations, most notably the importance of assessing all dimensions of mathematical proficiency within student evaluation processes.

الأهداف: التقصِّي عن فاعلية برنامج مهني القائم على الممارسات التدريسية في تحسين مكوّنات البراعة الرياضية لدى معلمي ومعلمات الرياضيات للحلقة الثانية من التعليم الأساسي في سلطنة عمان. المنهجية: تحقيقًا لأهداف الدراسة تم استخدام المنهج التجريبي بتصميم شبه تجريبي القائم على المجموعة الواحدة، بالقياسين (القبلي- البعدي)، من خلال إعداد برنامج مهني قائم على الممارسات التدريسية الضرورية لدى معلمي ومعلمات الرياضيات في ضوء الكتابات النظرية والدراسات السابقة التي تناولت البراعة الرياضية، كما تم إعداد بطاقة ملاحظة؛ لقياس مكونات البراعة الرياضية الخمسة المختلفة: (الاستيعاب المفاهيمي- الطلاقة الإجرائية- الكفاءة الإستراتيجية- الاستدلال الكيفي- الرغبة المنتجة)، وتم التأكد من صدقها وثباتها. تم تطبيق الدراسة على عينة مكونة من 31 معلم ومعلمة رياضيات، بمحافظة جنوب الشرقية في سلطنة عمان، الذين التحقوا بالبرنامج المهني، وذلك في الفصل الدراسي الأول من العام الدراسي 2024/2025م. النتائج: أظهرت نتائج الدراسة فاعلية البرنامج المهني القائم على الممارسات التدريسية في تحسين مكوّنات البراعة الرياضية بمكوناتها المختلفة لدى عينة الدراسة. كما أشارت النتائج إلى وجود فروق دالة إحصائيًا عند مستوى الدلالة α = .05) ) تبعًا لمتغير الجنس لصالح معلمات الرياضيات في بعض المكونات. على العكس من ذلك، لم تظهر النتائج أي فروق دالة إحصائيًا تبعًا لمتغير سنوات الخبرة في التدريس. التوصيات والمقترحات: في ضوء تلك النتائج قدم الباحثان عددًا من التوصيات والمقترحات المرتبطة بالنتائج، من أهمها: الاهتمام بتقويم جميع أبعاد البراعة الرياضية ضمن تقويم الطلبة.
