Abstract

Objectives: The study aimed to explore the role of artificial intelligence (AI) applications in promoting Palestinian media innovation through analyzing the perspectives of media students at An-Najah National University and the American University in Jenin.Methodology: The study adopted a mixed descriptive approach (quantitative and qualitative). A questionnaire was used as the primary data collection tool, administered to a sample of (274) male and female media students from An-Najah National University and the American University in Palestine. In addition, semi-structured interviews were conducted with (10) media experts and communication practitioners. Results: After conducting the necessary statistical analysis, the findings indicated that the overall level of AI applications as a driver of Palestinian media innovation, from the perspective of media students at both universities, was moderate. The results also revealed that there were no statistically significant differences in respondents’ perceptions of AI applications as a driver of media innovation attributable to gender or university. The qualitative findings showed that AI applications are witnessing an increasing presence in the Palestinian media environment, particularly in content production, editing, and digital platform management. The results further demonstrated that these applications have contributed to enhancing media innovation by developing new methods of content production, accelerating media workflows, and improving audience engagement. Conclusion: the findings indicated a shift in the roles of communication practitioners toward more supervisory, verification-based, and technically oriented functions. However, several challenges emerged, including a lack of training, weak technical infrastructure, and ethical and professional concerns. Finally, the results highlighted a positive trend toward expanding the future use of artificial intelligence in the media sector. Recommendations: The study recommends integrating artificial intelligence (AI) applications into the curricula of media and communication colleges through theoretical and practical courses designed to enhance students’ competencies in utilizing AI tools for content production, audience analysis, and the development of contemporary media practices. It also recommends organizing training programs and practical workshops in collaboration between universities and media institutions to strengthen students’ practical proficiency in AI applications. Furthermore, support should be provided for student projects, competitions, and applied research in this field, alongside strengthening field training and partnerships with media organizations. Such initiatives would contribute to bridging the gap between academic knowledge and professional requirements while fostering creativity and developing the digital skills of media students.
