Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the BASC-3 (BESS) among Omani school students. Method: The descriptive approach was used to achieve the study objectives, the self-report form was administered to a random sample of 13764 students in grades 7, 9, and 11 from various educational governorates in Oman. Results: Following theoretically and empirically justified modifications, the scale demonstrated an acceptable three-factor structure in the Omani context. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), at both first- and second-order levels, showed satisfactory model fit, with significant factor loadings ranging from 0.38–0.89. Psychological network analysis confirmed structural stability. Internal consistency reliability was acceptable to good via Cronbach’s alpha and McDonald’s omega (rang=0.60–0.82). Descriptive means 1.65–2.13 indicated a low level of behavioral and emotional problems in the sample. Recommendation: Specialized institutions should utilize the standardized version of the scale, and the family, school, and community must continue their roles in maintaining low levels across the three risk indicators. Conclusions: The BASC-3 scale is valid for monitoring behavioral and emotional problems and is reliable for use in this Omani environment, with reference to the stability of its structure across genders, making it a useful tool for educational and psychological specialists in Oman.
